Proposal Areas

Whetstone

16,060 acres (25.1 square miles)

Setting
Whetstone is located approximately two miles south and west of the Town of Crested Butte. It is comprised for the most part of three mountain peaks, Whetstone Mountain, Mt Axtell (12,055 ft) and Carbon Peak (12,079) located between the Ohio Creek Road #730 and the Kebler Pass Road (State Hwy 133).

What’s special about it?
Rugged terrain, dense vegetation, distance away from developments and lack of trails within the area provide an ideal landscape for wilderness designation. In fact, the US Forest Service has identified the Whetstone Area as a recommended Wilderness area in a draft forest plan released in 2007.

Although only a few miles from town, the Whetstone area provides a perfect environment for those seeking adventure or escape from daily life. The proposal area contains the headwaters of Carbon Creek and Ohio Creek. Spruce, fir and aspen make up a majority of the vegetation along with native grasses and willows.
