2010 Hidden Gems Hike Series - June, July, and August
Join the Hidden Gems Wilderness Campaign this summer for a hike in one of the proposed wilderness areas – check out the schedule for a hike near you!
All hikes are free, but you need to register in advance by clicking the name of the hike or emailing the hike coordinator in the appropriate county or valley. All outings are limited to 15 participants.
If you're not the group-hiking type, then why not do your own Hidden Gems hike, and take along some friends? If you do, please contact us before you go so we can provide maps, advice on routes, and information on how to advocate for the areas. Also, please send us your pictures – we'll be happy to post them on our website or Hidden Gems Facebook page.
To sign up, please click the name of the hike you wish to attend.

Summer Hike Series Schedule
Saturday, August 14
Quandary Peak
Hike Quandary Peak, one of Colorado's spectacular Fourteeners!
Sunday, August 15
Treasure Mountain
13,500-foot Treasure Mountain looms over the upper Crystal River canyon and is a magnet for snow. The hike ascends the rugged but lush flanks of the mountain into Bear Basin, and on to the summit if weather permits.
Thursday, August 19
Acorn Creek
Hike Acorn Creek, a beautiful example of diverse wildlife habitat, with elevation from grass shrub steppe and lodgepole pines, up to aspens, and on up to alpine tundra on the top of the Williams Fork ridge. The elevation ranges from 8,800 feet at Acorn Creek to 12,254 at Ute Peak. The surrounding area provides a transition zone linking the Ptarmigan Peak Wilderness Area to important mid-elevation wildlife habitat.
Sunday, August 22
Fitzpatrick and Twining (Blue) Peaks
Hike two high thirteeners on the Continental Divide above Independence Pass in our proposed addition to the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness. Access is from the top of Independence Pass, so views are great from the very start.
Tuesday, August 24
Full Moon Hay Park
A repeat performance of last year’s hugely popular full-moon hike up the Thomas Lakes Trail, at the northern base of Mt. Sopris – fingers crossed, we’ll have another clear, mild evening again this year.
Sunday, August 29
Ute Pass
Hike Ute Pass, a beautiful example of diverse wildlife habitat, with elevation from grass shrub steppe and lodgepole pines, up to aspens, and on up to alpine tundra on the top of the Williams Fork ridge. The elevation ranges from 8,800 feet at Acorn Creek to 12,254 at Ute Peak. The surrounding area provides a transition zone linking the Ptarmigan Peak Wilderness Area to important mid-elevation wildlife habitat.
Saturday, September 4th
Seven Castles Waterfall
Back by popular demand! One of the best-kept secrets of the Fryingpan Valley, the incredible Seven Castles Creek is like a wormhole to the Utah redrock country. If you’ve never been, join this guided hike to learn how to access the canyon.
