For years we've been writing letters, attending meetings 
and advocating for the protection of new wilderness. But the best way to truly know these areas is to get out there to connect and see for ourselves why these places are worth protecting.
This year the Wilderness Workshop is taking the lead on organizing the hike series - click on the links below for detailed information about each hike and to sign up.
This summer is an especially exciting hike series, since we'll be leading hikes into areas proposed for protection under Sen. Udall's Central Mountian Outdoor Heritage Act (and a few additional lands we think should be added). Join us for guided hikes into some of the state's last remaining unprotected wild lands, and get a first hand experience in some of the places we're trying to protect for future generations.
All hikes are free, but you need to register in advance by clicking the name of the hike or emailing the hike coordinator in the appropriate county or valley. In the spirit of Wilderness, all outings are limited to 15 participants.
If you're not the group-hiking type, then why not do your own hike, and take along some friends? If you do, please contact us before you go so we can provide maps, advice on routes, and information on how to advocate for the proposal areas. Also, please send us your pictures – we'll be happy to post them on our website or Facebook page.

Wednesday, August 1st – Full Moon Hike (Hay Park)
A quick hike brings us up to a moonlit meadow at the base of Mt. Sopris.
Sunday, August 5th – Huntsman Ridge (Hays Creek)
A steep ascent brings us up to breathtaking views of Mt. Sopris. Come check out proposed wilderness in Carbondale’s backyard.
Sunday, August 12th – Lower Piney
Straddling a tributary of the upper Colorado River, Lower Piney is a substantial proposed addition to the existing Eagles Nest Wilderness.
Saturday – Sunday, August 18&19 – Red Table Mountain Overnight
Backpack deep into the backcountry along Red Table’s ridge overlooking the Elks and the Frying Pan Valley.
Saturday, August 18th – Acorn Creek
A beautiful example of diverse wildlife habitat, with elevation from grass shrub steppe and lodgepole pines, up to aspens, and on up to alpine tundra on the top of the Williams Fork ridge
Saturday, August 25th – Spraddle Creek
This easy hike will be a meander through meadows, aspen and fir forests, with frequent stops to appreciate the bountiful Rocky Mountain wildflowers and marvel at the wildness accessible so near an interstate highway.
Sunday, August 26th – Petroleum Lake (Ruby Lakes)
Explore the ghost town of Ruby, and on up to this alpine lake near the top of Independence Pass.
Saturday, Sept 15th – Bulldog Creek (Crystal River)
Navigate a narrow canyon and steep side-slopes to a hidden waterfall, old mining tracks and a hand cart behind Mt. Sopris.
Saturday, September 22nd – Perham Creek (Thompson Creek)
Enjoy the fall colors on this rarely used trail in Carbondale’s backyard.
